Klein chess camp was held June 16-20, 2008. As parents dropped off children around 7:45 each morning, I autographed (sold) two copies of Children and Chess: A Guide for Educators and two copies of Science, Math, Checkmate: 32 Chess Activities for Inquiry and Problem Solving. This year I taught tactics in the upper camp, where students ranged from USCF 612-1479. The schedule was fantastic: One group of 8 students from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., then a recess/snack.

A second group, of 10 students, from 9:50 to 11 a.m., followed by lunch. A third group, of 8 students, from 11:45 to 1 p.m. For each of my three classes, I offered a five-minute break in the middle of class for restroom/water. Usually only one or two students took that break. The rest kept working all period. On the last class day (Thursday, as Friday was a tournament), all my classes spent part of the period playing chess charades (see p. 77 in Children and Chess). After the third class was another recess, and then a team chess game from 1:25 to 2:30. Teams of three students (a high-rated, medium-rated, and beginner) face other teams of three. There is an official board in the center of the room, and each team has an analysis board also. After deciding on the analysis board what to play, one team member makes the move on the official board. Another team member records the move. From 2:30 to 2:45 was snack. Swimming was from 3-4:50.
