FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 16, 2009
TORONTO ONTARIO. The 2009 PwC Toronto Open Chess Championship will be held at The Suites at 1 King West, Toronto’s newest luxury all suites hotel, over the weekend of April 17-19, 2009, beginning at 7:00pm on April 17. With over 200 registered participants, this event, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, makes it one of the largest of its kind in Toronto over the past decade.
Participants vary in age from 8-80 and herald from Canada, the U.S. and overseas. Due to the efforts of a number of dedicated organizations and coaches, chess has expanded rapidly throughout the school system in Canada and captured the imagination of gifted youngsters, and a number of these are participating in this, their first major-league tournament. The recent passing of the first wave of “baby boomers” into retirement has also rekindled the interest of this generation in a pastime of their youth, especially those that grew up in the “Fischer generation” of the 1960’s, and these too are well represented.
The substantial prize fund, in excess of $17,000, has also attracted a number of world class players, including 5 International Grandmasters and over 20 players with other recognized master titles. Competition will be fierce leading up to the meeting of leaders on the final day.
Those unable to attend in person will be able to follow the games live over the internet as top players will be using handheld wireless devices developed by Monroi Inc., a Montreal based company that is a world leader in live chess technology.
