Written by Alexey W. Root on Wed, Sep 18 2013 (19:22)

Dr. Alexey Root taught the beginners from 3:30 to 3:50, the intermediates from 3:50 to 4:25 and the advanced from 4:25 to 4:55.

The Beginners completed the "Classify" activity from Thinking with Chess: Teaching Children Ages 5-14.

The Intermediate students completed the Scholar's Mate activity from Read, Write, Checkmate: Enrich Literacy with Chess Activities. The students notated as part of the activity.

For the Advanced class, Dr. Root showed the moves and wrote the notation for this line of the Ruy Lopez, Exchange Variation. Students followed along on their boards and also kept up scoresheets.

1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Bxc6 dxc6

(At this point, we paused so that chess club members could play out on their boards what would happen if 5. Nxe5.)

5 0-0 Bg4 6 h3 h5 (With another break for students to figure out, by working with their partners, how this move 6…h5 worked) 7 d3

(At this point, we had to wrap up class so students were asked to research what might happen in moves 7-10 for next time).

Chess Quotes

And for the chess-player the success which crowns his work, the great dispeller of sorrows, is named "combination."
