FORMER CHESS ONLINE STUDENT STARTS CHESS CLUB PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alexey W. Root on Thu, Mar 25 2010 (15:25)
My former Chess Online student Kathy De La Torre emailed me recently. Since receiving her Master’s Degree from The University of Texas at Dallas in 2007, she has “been employed full time with the RISD for the past two school years as a 4th grade Reading/L.A. teacher. This year, with the full support of the principal, we have begun a chess club on campus. We currently meet every other Wednesday, and have had great turn out each and every week with an average of 35 students. We held our first tournament on Wednesday, March 24, the 1st Annual Jess Harben Chess Club Tournament.” Congrats to Kathy for putting what she learned in my online courses to work at her Richardson I.S.D.school!

CHESS IN EDUCATION FREE PRESENTATION PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alexey W. Root on Sat, Mar 13 2010 (05:10)
On March 23 from 4-5 p.m. I will be presenting at UTD. My talk "Chess is Now for Children: Changes Over the Past 40 Years" is part of a year-long series of 40 events (or more) created to mark UT Dallas' fourth decade as a UT System institution. My talk will address the changing demographics of chess during the past four decades, from its beginning as a game for adults to a game now dominated by children. I will give special emphasis to the role the University has played in the field of chess in education. Presentation will be on the fourth floor of the McDermott Library (McDermott Suite, MC 4.404).

For March 2, I had two new boys for a total of 9 (7 boys, 2 girls). This is the lesson plan and also what actually happened today.

And for the chess-player the success which crowns his work, the great dispeller of sorrows, is named "combination."
