Founded in Paris on 20 July 1924, the World Chess Federation (Federation Internationale des Echecs, known as FIDE from its French acronym) was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as an International Sports Federation in 1999.

Rupert Bazambanza is an illustrator and survivor of the April 1994 genocide in Rwanda. He emigrated to Montréal, Canada in 1997 where he received his training at the International Academy of Design. On September 7, 2011, at The Palais des congrès de Montréal, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, will be joined by Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi, world-famous author Deepak Chopra, Professors Tariq Ramadan, Robert Thurman, Steven T. Katz, Gregory Baum and Swami Dayananda Saraswati who will speak on the theme "Peace Through Religion". The conference will include: • A keynote address by the Dalai Lama • Talks given by the other participants • Panel discussions on the importance of inter-faith education and co-operative action • Discussion of a proposed Universal Declaration of Human Rights by The World's Religions
