The CYCC is a qualifier for the World Youth Chess Championships to be held in Turkey in the fall of 2009. 200 of the best young chess players in Canada are expected at the CYCC. Games will be broadcast on site, across Canada and around the world over the Internet using the MonRoi system. More than 1000 friends, family, spectators and chess enthusiasts from across Canada will be in Victoria for a week in late July. This is the second CYCC to be held in Victoria, BC. Events are planned from July 20th to 26th.

A Summer Chess Festival is also planned as part of the schedule of events. Many guest appearances and special events are in the planning stages. There will be something for everyone of all ages and all levels of prior chess knowledge including people new to chess.

One more reason to visit Victoria next year. The Royal British Columbia Museum has fortuitously scheduled, Treasures: The World’s Cultures from the British Museum, which makes its North American premiere at the RBCM, May 1 – Sept. 30, 2009, highlights cultural achievements – the artistic, ceremonial, decorative and functional. It illustrates how cultures have come together – and come apart – through the ages. And it brings together more than 300 artifacts dating from prehistoric times to today. Included in the list of artifacts are the Isle of Lewis Chess pieces.

The expected economic benefit to the local economy from the CYCC and the Summer Chess Festival is $500,000.

And for the chess-player the success which crowns his work, the great dispeller of sorrows, is named "combination."
