The Chess Olympiad is held every two years. Teams representing their countries from all over the world compete against each other. The event is organized by the host nation, which is selected by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

At the first Chess Olympiad held in London (1927) 16 teams participated, while this year in Dresden 154 teams were to compete. Eight teams withdrew their participation. 1270 chess players take part at the Olympiad in Dresden, 722 of them are men who play in 146 teams, and 548 of them are women who play in 111 teams. 257 team captains and 120 arbiters are on-site. Several hundred organizers, journalists and FIDE-officials accompany the teams. The players of the 38th Chess Olympiad come from 141 countries. Among the chess players there are 253 grandmasters, 65 women grandmasters, 176 international masters, 90 women international masters, 91 FIDE-masters and 86 women FIDE-masters.
